David

This has been a very popular given name over the years. Its origins are Hebrew going back to before 1000BC and has the meaning "beloved".

From the Old Testament of the Bible, David, son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, King of Judah and Israel, who reigned for forty years around 1000-965BC is without doubt the most famous. He united Israel as a Kingdom and passed on a stable country to his son Solomon. In this environment Solomon was able to build the first Temple at Jerusalem, fulfilling David's wish.
